Harry Potter 1-7

13 07 2011

Before I saw “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” I watched every Potter film there is, to have the most magical experience with the final chapter. I will not be writing long reviews of all of them, but here are some of my thoughts on the films continuously written down in the order that I… Thought of them.

“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” or, for some reason, in the U.S., “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” is the first film in the Potter franchise. It is the most whimsical, it’s the happiest one. It’s a good movie, and everyone acts accordingly. Radcliffe is certainly not as good as everyone else, but that’s forgivable given the scope of the whole project. Yes, it’s big and whimsical, but that may also be it’s weakness. If you like a happy, adventurous, joyful film, then you’ll enjoy (or have enjoyed) “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” But if you enjoy the darker Potter films, then “Philosopher’s Stone” isn’t as much for you as say “Half-Blood Prince.” I enjoy both ones, and I enjoyed “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” to its fullest.

“Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” is everything that “Philosopher’s Stone” is. It’s joyful, whimsical, happy. You’ll feel happy after watching the second chapter in the Potter franchise. But it has the same mistakes that the previous film has. Once again, dark Potter fans will not enjoy this as much as whimsical Potter fans. Still, you will enjoy “Chamber of Secrets,” I did, once again, to its fullest.

“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” was a turning point for the franchise. It went from happy to dark. It isn’t as dark as the following chapters, but with it’s British atmosphere, it is, at times, quite terrifying. It is the first and only one to be directed by Alfonso Cuarón. It is not far from being the best, but the tonal shift of the franchise is too abrupt here. When I first saw this movie, I expected something more “magical”.

“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” continues the saga with more darkness than “Prisoner of Azkaban.” Harry and his friends are no longer children, they are teenagers. This movie is dark, but appropriately so. As the actors and characters grow up, so does the franchise. “Goblet of Fire” is one of the best Potter films. It is directed by Mike Newell, and he does a great job. This Potter is satisfying on every level.

“Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” is the shortest Potter film (if you don’t count the latest), and an adaptation of the longest Potter book. It’s the first to be directed by David Yates, a visionary director. It is even darker than the previous Potters, and it has a few too abrupt moments, but “Order of the Phoenix” is an entertaining, action packed, quite humorous, and ultimately satisfying Potter.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” is yet another, even darker Potter. It is a turning point again, but this time, the Potters do not simply become darker, they become serious. They become somewhat important. After watching “Half-Blood Prince,” I felt as I had experienced something very important. I felt for the characters, especially for Snape, portrayed award-worthy by Alan Rickman. One of the best Potters.

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” is my kind of movie. It isn’t as dark or important as the previous installment, but it is more emotional. It’s my kind of movie though, because of the magnificent landscapes. “DH: Part 1” is more of a road-trip movie than a wizard epic. This Potter allows the filmmakers to show Britain’s majestic landscapes. I’m a fool for beautiful vistas, and this is among the better Potters.

As a conclusion, I must say that the Potter franchise is amazing. I’ve read four books, and I enjoyed them. Almost as equally as I’ve enjoyed all of the films. What they’ve done here, it’s awe-inspiring. I wouldn’t change a thing about most the Potter films, they’re already perfect.
